Global Illumination, based in New York, was established in 2021 by Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon, and Joey Flynn. All three founders have previous experience working at Meta Platforms’ Instagram. Their recent focus involved contributing to open-source technology related to online game production. Notably, Thomas Dimson is credited with laying the groundwork for Instagram’s content ranking algorithms, a significant feat in his career.

OpenAI's Bold Move: Acquiring Global Illumination and Transforming Work with ChatGPT

While OpenAI makes strides in advancing AI capabilities, a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll uncovered that a growing number of workers across the United States are relying on ChatGPT for assistance with routine tasks. This trend persists despite apprehensions that have led major companies like Microsoft and Google to impose restrictions on its use. As enterprises around the world grapple with harnessing ChatGPT’s potential, concerns about potential information leaks regarding intellectual property and strategic plans have emerged from both security firms and businesses.

Examples of ChatGPT’s utility span from drafting emails and summarising documents to performing initial research. The poll conducted between July 11 and 17 highlighted that around 28 percent of respondents reported regular use of ChatGPT in their work routine. Interestingly, only 22 percent indicated that their employers explicitly sanctioned the use of such external AI tools.

OpenAI’s acquisition of Global Illumination marks a significant step in their pursuit of AI innovation, and the growing adoption of ChatGPT among professionals signals a changing landscape in how people incorporate AI into their daily tasks.
