
New Delhi: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, welcomed H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. The meeting marked a significant moment as the world commemorates 80 years of the United Nations.
During their discussions, President Murmu highlighted India’s commitment to active and constructive participation in key global platforms, including the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development and the Third UN Ocean Conference. She reiterated India’s steadfast support for the Global South, guided by the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family).
A key focus of the meeting was the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in multilateral institutions, particularly the UN Security Council, to better reflect contemporary global realities. President Murmu praised Mr. Yang’s emphasis on a science and data-driven approach to sustainable development and lauded his leadership in the adoption of the “Pact for the Future” during the 2024 Summit for the Future in New York.
The two leaders also discussed the strong bilateral ties between India and Cameroon, particularly in areas of development partnership and capacity building. President Murmu noted India’s special relationship with Africa, recalling India’s instrumental role in securing the African Union’s permanent membership in the G-20 during its presidency in 2023.
The visit underscores India’s growing influence on the global stage and its commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable development worldwide.
