Summery of Chandrayaan-3

  • India is launching its third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, today from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The mission consists of a lander and a rover that will attempt to soft-land on the moon’s south pole and explore its surface.
  • Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-up to Chandrayaan-2, which failed to land on the moon in 2019 due to a technical glitch.
  • The launch window for Chandrayaan-3 is between 2:43 pm and 3:43 pm IST. The mission is expected to reach the moon in about 16 days.
  • ISRO chief K Sivan said that Chandrayaan-3 is a “very challenging” mission and that the agency has learned from the previous mistakes.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO and said that Chandrayaan-3 will inspire future generations of scientists and explorers.

Summery of Chandrayaan-3

Some of the scientific objectives of Chandrayaan-3 are:

  • To safely land on the lunar surface and deploy a rover
  • To conduct in-situ scientific experiments on the chemical and natural elements, soil, water, etc. available on the surface of the Moon to better understand and practise the composition of the Moon.
  • To explore the lunar South Pole, which is still largely unexplored and may have signs of water and tectonic activity.
  • To develop and demonstrate new technologies required for interplanetary missions.
  • To possibly capture India’s first ‘selfie’ from the Moon using the lander’s camera.
